2014 Otzeniana Update

28 Dec

The Otzeniana seedlings are 8 months old and doing fantastic!  I have 25 hardy plants and will be transplanting them to their more permanent location next weekend.  I can’t wait to see these seedlings grow up!  I can already see variety in the pot with some blues, greens, and yellows 🙂

Great batch of seedlings. You’ll have a wonderful collection of L. otzeniana plants. They are one of my favorite lithops in terms of their leaf surface patterns. There seems to be a lot of variation in the size of the seedlings. Did the seeds germinate over a long time period? Or, has the seedlings varied a lot in their growth rates? I often notice some seedlings make steady growth while others seem to sit still and not grow for an extended period. I’ve always wondered if there were substantial differences in the root development between the fast growers and the slow growers. I’ve been tempted up dig up a batch of seedlings and examine their root systems, but never had the courage to do it! 🙂 I just didn’t want to lose one single seedlings. Happy New Lithops Year!

Thanks, Bob! Yes, I noticed these ones developed at different rates. Actually, it happened in a couple other pots too where I’d notice one or two robust seedlings and the rest lagging behind. I was starting to wonder if maybe the strongest plants released a hormone in the soil to inhibit the rapid growth of the others. Perhaps it happened because they are so close together. I plan on transplanting them soon so I’ll let you know about the roots!

Happy New Lithops Year to you too! I wish you great success with your collection 🙂
