Conophytum Minimum “Wittebergense”. Really???

25 Nov

I’ve been paying a bit more attention to the Conophytum now that the Lithops are going down for their Winter sleep and the more research I do, the more skeptical I get.  I don’t think my Conophytum seedlings are “Wittebergense”.  I bought these seeds from the same seller that sold me the “Fred’s Redhead” seeds and well, we all know how that turned out (they were actually “Ablinica” seeds).  Ugh.

“Wittebergense” has a purple hue and definite stripes, even on very young seedlings.  My seedlings are most definitely green and dotted.  There are other Minimum’s that are green and dotted, so I think mine are most likely a close relative of what I thought I had.

I considered the “Fred’s Redhead” scenario an honest mistake but now that I look at my Conophytum, I have to wonder.  I will give benefit of the doubt though and say maybe it’s just an organization/record keeping problem.

I love my Conophytum regardless of their precise taxonomy 🙂
