The Lithops seedlings are now 12 days old. I’ve started removing their plastic cover periodically throughout the day for short periods to get them used to being exposed to the air. I’ll slowly increase the time they are exposed until they are able to go topless for the entire day (hopefully by the end of next weekend). I am still misting them daily and suspect that will continue until they are a few months old. So far, they look great!

The lithops seedlings are growing thicker and stronger everyday! They are 10 days old today 🙂
Hmmmm…still only three seedlings. I’m now thinking that I layered the “dusting” of sand on top too thick. I’ve read that the seeds need sunlight to germinate and if the sand blocked out all or most of the sun, I can see how that would delay or even prevent germination. I’m leaving the top on the sealer for the next week but I’m not hopeful we’ll get many more out of this batch.
March 15th, 2013. So far, we only have three seedlings, but they look strong!
Sowing day for our first batch of mixed seeds was on Friday, March 8th. The first little seedling emerged on Wednesday, March 13th and two more were visible this morning! I’m going to have to get a magnifying glass to watch them develop as they sure are tiny.
I used a mix of 1/2 cactus potting mix and 1/2 course sand. I sowed the seeds directly on the mix and covered them with more sand…just a dusting…so they’d have some support as they grow. At the time, I thought it would be a good idea to sow the seeds in a canning jar, but now I regret that decision. How am I going to get them out? And being an enclosed jar, the soil can’t drain freely. I’ll have to be extra careful with my watering.
Looking forward to more seedlings over the next few days. I planted 40 seeds so expect 20 or so seedlings when all is said and done.
